Common TIJ Ink Cartridge Troubleshooting & Solution Flowchart

TIJ (Thermal Inkjet) Cartridges are widely used for printing production dates, batch numbers, QR codes, and variable data. During operation, issues such as broken print lines, blurred characters, nozzle clogging, or cartridge recognition failures may occur.

This article provides a Common TIJ Ink Cartridge Troubleshooting & Solution Flowchart to help you quickly identify the cause, restore stable printing, extend cartridge life, and reduce maintenance costs.

 

PS: This article applies only to solvent-based ink cartridges. For water-based cartridges, please clean with a damp cloth and gently shake the cartridge.

 

Common TIJ Ink Cartridge Troubleshooting & Solution Flowchart

Step 1:  Check the cartridge nozzle has scratches

If Yes, Cartridge irreparable, please replace the TIJ ink cartridge.

Step 2:  If no, draw a mark with the cartridge on a cleaning cloth/tissue

Draw clear mark, nozzle clogging not detected. Print defects are unrelated to the ink cartridge.

Mark is faint, nozzle is clogged.

Step 3:  Cartridge unclogging steps 1

Drop 2-3 drops of alcohol onto the cartridge nozzle, wait 5 seconds, then wipe clean with a dry cloth.

If the print still breaks, proceed to step 2.

Step 4:  Cartridge unclogging steps 2

Drop 2-3 drops of CIJ cleaning solution(butanone) onto the cartridge nozzle, wait 5 seconds, then wipe clean with a dry cloth.

If the print still breaks, proceed to step 3.

Use an ink suction tool to extract 1-2ml of ink from the cartridge.

If the print still breaks, proceed to step 4.

Physically rub the cartridge back and forth on a cleaning cloth (mechanical cleaning). Or run the cartridge multiple times on an online/handheld printer with built-in cleaning function (electrical cleaning).

If the print still breaks, proceed to step 5.

Step 7:  Cartridge unclogging steps 5

The issue is likely a burned-out cartridge chip (especially for solvent-based cartridges, which cannot exceed 10V).

Handheld printers are prone to burning cartridges due to imprecise voltage control, where prolonged high voltage stimulation damages the clip.
