How to Choose a TIJ Printer: A Beginner’s Guide to Thermal Inkjet Coding

If you are buying a TIJ printer for the first time, it is easy to focus only on the printer price. However, a good TIJ printer (Thermal Inkjet printer) should match your printing material, print height, production speed, ink type, coding content, and working environment etc. This beginner’s guide explains the key factors you should consider before buying a TIJ printer.

1. What Do You Need to Print?

Before comparing different TIJ printers, start with the most basic question: What information do you need to print? Common TIJ printing applications include:

• Batch and lot numbers
• Production dates and expiry dates
• Barcodes and QR codes
• Data Matrix codes
• Variable text
• Serial numbers
• Logos and simple graphics

If you only need to print dates, batch numbers, or simple text, a basic TIJ printer may be enough. If you need multiple lines, high-resolution barcodes, variable data, or larger graphics, you should consider a more advanced industrial TIJ printer.

So before comparing printer models, define your actual printing content first.

2. What Material Are You Printing On?

The substrate is another major factor when choosing a TIJ printer. TIJ printers can be used for a wide range of materials. The important point is that the TIJ printer and TIJ ink must work together with the substrate.

Porous materials such as paper and cardboard commonly use water-based inks, while non-porous materials such as plastic films often require solvent-based inks with suitable adhesion and drying characteristics.

3. Choose the Right Print Height: 0.5 Inch, 1 Inch or More?

Print height is one of the first specifications to check when choosing a TIJ printer. For most TIJ printers, 12.7 mm (0.5 inch) and 25.4 mm (1 inch) are the two common print-height options.

But here is something beginners often overlook: Not every TIJ printer supports both 0.5-inch and 1-inch ink cartridges. Some TIJ printers are designed around a fixed printhead format, while others provide more flexibility.

4. Match Printing Speed with Your Production Line

Printing speed is another important consideration. However, beginners often compare the maximum speed printed on the specification sheet.

The maximum speed of a TIJ printer does not necessarily equal the speed you can achieve in your actual application.

Actual printing speed can be affected by: Print resolution, Number of print lines, Content density, Product spacing and Conveyor speed etc.

For example, printing one short line of text at a lower resolution requires much less data than printing multiple lines of high-density codes.

Therefore, when comparing TIJ printers, test the printer under your actual production conditions.

5. Choose the Right TIJ Printer Type

TIJ printers are commonly available in different configurations. For beginners, the easiest way to choose is to consider how the printer will be used.

A. Handheld TIJ Printer

A handheld TIJ printer is suitable for small-batch production, occasional coding, and applications where products cannot easily be moved to a fixed production line. It is flexible and easy to operate, but it may not be the best choice for high-speed automated production.

B. Online TIJ Printer

An online TIJ printer is designed to integrate with production lines. It is a better choice when you need continuous printing, higher production speeds, automatic triggering, multiple printheads, or larger printing areas.

6. Check Production Line Integration

If you are installing a TIJ printer on an automated production line, you should look beyond the printer itself. Depending on your application, you may need: Photoelectric sensors, Encoders, External triggers, I/O interfaces, Communication interfaces, Conveyor integration.

For example, a sensor can detect when a product reaches the printing position, while an encoder can synchronize printing with conveyor movement.

Before purchasing, make sure the printer can communicate with the equipment already installed on your production line.

7. Consider Your Working Environment

A TIJ printer used in a clean packaging environment may have very different requirements from one used in a dusty industrial factory.

Before choosing a printer, consider: Temperature, Humidity, Dust, Cleaning requirements and Installation space etc.  You should also consider the position of the printhead.

• Is the printer printing from the top, side, or bottom?
• Is the product stable while passing the printhead?
• Is there enough space to install and maintain the printer?
• These details may seem small, but they can affect long-term printing stability.

8. Don’t Forget Ease of Operation and Maintenance

A TIJ printer can have excellent technical specifications and still be inconvenient for daily production. For beginners and production operators, check:

• Is the interface easy to understand?
• Is changing print content simple?
• Is cleaning straightforward?
• Is cartridge replacement easy?
• Can new operators learn the system quickly?

For a production line, ease of operation is not just a convenience. It can directly affect setup time, operator workload, and downtime.
