TIJ Consumables Guide: Everything Beginners Need to Know & How to Choose the Right TIJ Consumables

If you are new to Thermal Inkjet (TIJ) printing, choosing the right consumable can be confusing.

What is the difference between a standard TIJ ink cartridge and a high-capacity TIJ ink cartridge? What does de-cap time mean? Does a larger ink cartridge print higher? The answer is: TIJ consumables are not simply containers of ink.

The ink formulation, cartridge capacity, printhead format, drying time, adhesion and de-cap time etc. can all affect your final printing performance. This guide explains the major types of TIJ consumables in simple language, helping beginners understand what to look for before purchasing a TIJ consumable.

I. What Are TIJ Consumables?

TIJ stands for Thermal Inkjet. A TIJ ink cartridge uses tiny heating elements inside the printhead to rapidly heat the ink and create microscopic bubbles. The pressure generated by the bubbles pushes ink droplets through the nozzles and onto the substrate.

In a typical TIJ printing system:

TIJ Printer = Printing System

TIJ Consumables = Ink + Cartridge / Ink Supply System

For beginners, the most important thing to understand is that different TIJ consumables are designed for different production requirements.  A cartridge that works well on corrugated cardboard may not be suitable for plastic film. Likewise, a standard 42 ml ink cartridge may be perfectly adequate for a small production line but inefficient for a high-volume factory.

II. What Are the Main Types of TIJ Consumables?

When people talk about TIJ consumables, they may actually be referring to two different things:

1. Ink Supply Format

Main options include: Standard TIJ Ink Cartridge, High-Capacity TIJ Ink Cartridge, TIJ Bulk Ink System, TIJ Bulk inks.

2. Ink Type

This describes what type of ink is inside the ink cartridge or ink system.

Common options include: Water-Based Ink & Solvent-Based Ink, Pigment Ink & Dye-Based Ink, Food-Grade Ink, Security Inks.

This distinction is important.

145 ml describes ink capacity.

Solvent-based describes ink type.

12.7 mm describes printhead/print height configuration.

These are completely different parameters.

3. Standard TIJ Ink Cartridges（42ml）

The standard TIJ ink cartridge is the easiest consumable for beginners. The basic workflow is simple: Insert → Print → Replace.

This makes standard ink cartridges particularly attractive for:

• Small production lines
• Low-to-medium production volumes

Advantages:  Easy to use, Easy to replace.

Limitation：The main limitation is ink capacity. If your production line consumes a large amount of ink every day, frequently replacing small ink cartridges can increase: Downtime, Labor, Consumable management, Operating cost.

4. High-Capacity TIJ Ink Cartridges

A high-capacity TIJ ink cartridge is designed to reduce cartridge replacement frequency. Common capacities may include approximately: 60 ml, 120 ml, 145 ml, 150 ml or more.

5. TIJ Bulk Ink Systems

For high-volume production, a bulk ink system can provide a more continuous ink supply. Instead of repeatedly replacing individual ink cartridges, ink is supplied from a larger reservoir or ink bag.

Typical capacities may include: 250 ml, 350 ml, 500 ml, Larger customized capacities. A bulk ink system is designed for: Longer Printing Runs + Fewer Consumable Changes.

6. TIJ Inks (Bulk Ink)

TIJ inks are mainly classified into three categories: ink base, colorant type, and special functional inks. Different ink formulations are designed for different substrates, printing requirements, and industries.

A. Water-Based Ink vs Solvent-Based Ink (Classified by ink base)

B. Pigment Ink vs Dye-Based Ink (Classified by colorant type)

• Need stronger durability → Pigment Ink
• Need bright color and smooth printing → Dye-Based Ink

C. Functional TIJ Inks

Functional inks are designed for special industry requirements rather than basic material compatibility.

III. Important TIJ Consumable Parameters

1. What Is De-cap Time?

De-cap time means how long a TIJ ink cartridge can remain uncapped and exposed to air while still recovering normal printing performance. A longer de-cap time is useful for: Frequent machine stops, Product changeovers, Intermittent production

De-cap Time ≠ Shelf-Life    De-cap Time ≠ Drying Time

2. Are TIJ ink cartridges encrypted?

Depends on: Printer model, TIJ platform, Cartridge interface, Chip configuration.  Compatible cartridge ≠ Universal cartridge

V. Common TIJ Consumable Buying Mistakes

Mistake 1: Choosing the Cheapest Ink Cartridge

A cheaper ink cartridge does not always mean lower total cost. You should calculate: Ink Cost + Replacement Frequency + Downtime + Labor

Mistake 2: Bigger Capacity Is Always Better

High-capacity ink cartridge is not automatically better than a 42ml ink cartridge. The right capacity depends on: Daily Ink Consumption + Production Hours + Replacement Cost

Mistake 3：“Compatible” Means Everything Is Compatible

An ink cartridge may be mechanically compatible but not compatible in: Chip, Software, Printhead control

Mistake 4: Choosing Ink Without Testing

Never assume: “Same substrate name = Same printing performance.”  Two BOPP films can have different surface treatments. Two PET materials can have different coatings. Always test the actual production substrate.

Mistake 5: Confusing De-cap Time and Drying Time

Drying Time = How fast the printed ink dries

De-cap Time = How long the exposed printhead can remain idle and resume printing
