What Factors Affect TIJ Ink Cartridge Yield?
How many prints can a TIJ ink cartridge make? There is no fixed answer. The actual yield depends on how much ink is consumed for each print. Many factors can affect TIJ ink consumption, from print settings and printhead configuration to the ink, substrate, and working environment. Here are the key factors to consider.

I. Content & Software Settings
1. Print DPI / Grey Level
Print density directly affects how much ink is deposited on the substrate. A higher resolution usually requires more ink droplets to form the printed characters, barcodes, QR codes, or graphics.
For example, a darker print requires more ink than a light print. On some TIJ printers, increasing the grey level or number of printing passes can produce a darker image while increasing ink consumption.
2. Message Length and Print Content
The more information you print, the more ink you generally use.
A simple date code uses much less ink than a message containing multiple lines, logos, barcodes, QR codes, batch numbers, and variable data.
3. Print Height
A taller print may require more active nozzles and more ink droplets to create the complete image.
For example, printing a single-line 12.7 mm message and printing a larger multi-line image can result in very different ink consumption.
4. Font
Different fonts can have a significant impact on ink consumption. Bold fonts and complex characters require more ink droplets, which increases ink consumption per print. In comparison, thinner fonts with simpler strokes generally use less ink.

II. Cartridge & Nozzle Hardware
1. Printhead Nozzle Size
The size of the printhead nozzles affects the volume of each ink droplet. Larger droplets generally deposit more ink with each firing, while smaller droplets use less ink under comparable conditions.
Therefore, nozzle size and droplet volume should also be considered when estimating cartridge yield.
2. Cartridge Capacity
TIJ Ink Cartridge capacity determines how much ink is available, but it does not determine the exact number of prints.
For example, a 145 ml ink cartridge contains significantly more ink than a standard 42 ml ink cartridge, so it can provide a longer operating time under the same printing conditions.
However, the actual number of prints still depends on ink consumption per print.
3. Ink Type
Different TIJ inks have different formulations and are designed for different applications.
Water-based, solvent-based, pigment, dye, food-grade, and other specialized inks may have different droplet and drying characteristics.

III. Machine Performance & Calibration
1. Printer Voltage
The motherboard driver controls the thermal pulse voltage. Over-voltage or improper pulse width increases droplet size unnecessarily, leading to ink waste and faster depletion.
2. Printhead Firing Frequency
The firing frequency determines how frequently the nozzles eject ink droplets during printing.
When the printer operates at a higher firing frequency, more ink may be consumed over the same period, depending on the printing parameters and application.
3. Encoder & Production Line Speed Synchronization
Incorrect pulse signal calculations from the encoder can cause dynamic stretching or distortion of printed characters, consuming extra ink per print cycle.
4. Print Speed
Printing speed does not necessarily change the ink consumption of every individual print, but it can affect the overall ink consumption of a production line.
For high-speed applications, printing parameters may need to be adjusted to maintain print quality and positioning accuracy.

IV. Operating Environment & Maintenance
1. Substrate and Surface Characteristics
The substrate can affect how ink spreads, absorbs, and dries after printing.
Paper and cardboard are generally more absorbent, while plastic, film, metal, and other non-porous materials have different surface characteristics.
If the print settings are not optimized for the substrate, users may need more ink to achieve the desired print quality.
2. Printing Environment
Temperature, humidity, dust, and other environmental conditions can affect TIJ printing performance.
For example, environmental conditions can affect ink drying and nozzle performance, which may require changes to printing parameters.
3. Cartridge Storage and Maintenance
Ink cartridge condition and maintenance should not be overlooked.
Improper storage, prolonged exposure to air, dried nozzles, or poor cartridge maintenance can affect nozzle performance and printing stability.
